Augsburg College is a selective liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, located in Minneapolis, which is the largest city in the US state of Minnesota, also serving as the county seat of Hennepin County, and being, as well, the 48th largest city in the US, housing more than 386 000 people, within its limits, as estimated during the 2009 census.
The college was established in 1869, and was originally founded as Augsburg Seminary, in Marshall, Wisconsin, being moved in Minneapolis, in 1872, and adopting its current name in 1963. It currently offers its students undergraduate degrees in over 50 major areas of study, including six graduate degrees (Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Leadership, Master in Business Administration, Master of Social Work, Master of Arts in Nursing, and Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies).
Augsburg's athletic teams are known as the Auggies and they compete in NCAA Division III Athletics, with 9 men's and 9 women's varsity sports teams. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gray and their mascot is the Eagle.
Anne Panning - writer, winner of 2006 Flannery O'Connor Award for Super America, Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann (Johnson) Nelson - authors and winners of a Minnesota Book Award, and Peter Agre - Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry and faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, are among the noteworthy graduates from Augsburg College.
